أخبرني محمد بن علي الصنعاني بمكة، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم بن عبَّاد، أخبرنا عبد الرزاق، أخبرنا مَعمَر، عن عبد الله بن عثمان بن خُثَيم، عن أبي الزُّبير، عن جابر بن عبد الله قال: لما مَرَّ النبيُّ ﷺ بالحِجْر قال: "لا تَسأَلوا الآياتِ، فقد سألها قومُ صالح، فكانت (1) تَرِدُ من هذا الفجِّ وتَصدُرُ من هذا الفجِّ، فعَتَوْا عن أمرِ ربِّهم فعَقَروها، فأخذتهم الصَّيحةُ، فأَهمَدَ اللهُ مَن تحتَ السماءِ منهم إلَّا رجلًا واحدًا كان في حَرَمِ الله" قيل: مَن هو؟ قال: "أبو رِغَالٍ، فلمَّا خرج من الحَرَم أَصابَه ما أصاب قومَه" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by al-Hijr (the land of the people of Thamud), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not ask for miracles, for the people of Salih asked (in the same way). So it (the she-camel) would come by this mountain pass and leave by that mountain pass. Then they rebelled against the command of their Lord and slaughtered it, so a dreadful Blast seized them, and Allah destroyed all of their people who were beneath the sky except one man who was in the Sanctuary of Allah." It was asked: "Who was he?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He was Abu Righal. Then when he left the Sanctuary, the same calamity befell him that had befallen his people."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد قوي من أجل ابن خثيم، وتابعه ابن جريج فيما سيأتي عند المصنف برقم (4114)، وأبو الزبير -وهو محمد بن مسلم بن تَدرُس- صرَّح بسماعه من جابر هناك.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain is "qawi" (strong) on account of Ibn Khuthaym.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Jurayj corroborated him in what will come with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (4114), and there Abu al-Zubayr - who is Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus - explicitly stated that he heard it from Jabir.
وأخرجه أحمد 22 / (14160) عن عبد الرزاق، بهذا الإسناد.

الحِجْر: ديار ثمود قوم صالح، وهي في وادي القُرى شمال المدينة المنوَّرة، تبعد عنها 350 كيلومترًا تقريبًا.
Note / Clarification: "الحِجْر" (al-Hijr) is the dwelling place of Thamud, the people of Salih (peace be upon him). It is in Wadi al-Qura, north of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, about 350 kilometres from it.
