Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3280

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for us (on the ground), then drew (other) lines to its right and its left, then said: "This is the path of Allah, and these (lines on the right and left) are various paths, on each of which sits a devil calling to it." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "And this is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow other paths, for they will separate you from His path" [Surah al-An'am: 153].
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. A supporting narration for it, with the very same wording, is transmitted by al-Sha'bi from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) through a route that is not relied upon.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is hasan on account of Asim bin Abi al-Nujud.
Note / Clarification: Abu Wa'il (in the chain) is Shaqiq bin Salamah, and Abd Allah is Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakim was contradicted in the first chain of this hadith by the imam, hadith scholar and Qur'an commentator Abu al-Qasim al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin al-Hasan, with Abu Ishaq al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" (1/ 121): he narrated it from Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub and made it a narration of Zirr bin Hubaysh, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: The same occurs in the narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Saghani, from Sulayman bin Harb, from Hammad bin Zayd, with Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah al-Kubra" (1/ 293).
Details of the narration: It appeared earlier with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (2975) in the narration of Ahmad bin Abd Allah bin Yunus, from Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, from Asim, from Zirr, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Important point: In any case, Zirr and Abu Wa'il are both eminent thiqah (trustworthy) companions of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), so the disagreement over them does no harm. Perhaps - as al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in his "Tafsir" - Asim had this hadith from Zirr and from Abu Wa'il, both of them from Ibn Mas'ud. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it (7/ 4437) from Aswad bin Amir, from Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, from Asim, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: As for the second chain, Ahmad recorded it (4142), al-Nasa'i (11109), and Ibn Hibban (6) and (7), by various routes from Hammad bin Zayd, with the same chain.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): That is because its narrator from al-Sha'bi is Mujalid bin Sa'id, who is weak according to the majority of hadith scholars.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it from his narration (23/ (15277)), and Ibn Majah (11).
