It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "He placed prophets among you" that it means He made prophets from among you; and concerning "and made you kings" he said: (It refers to one who has) a wife and a servant; and concerning "and gave you what He had not given anyone among the worlds" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 20] he said: (It refers to the people) who were present among them in that era.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This is how it is in the printed edition, and it is the correct reading, whereas in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" it is "جعل ومنكم", and in the manuscripts it is "جعلكم ومنكم"!
Grading: Its chain is "qawi" (strong). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan bin Sa'id is al-Thawri. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4298) by way of Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Shakir, from Mus'ab bin al-Miqdam, with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded the last part of it in his "Tafsir" (6/ 170) by way of Abd al-Aziz bin Aban, from Sufyan, with the same chain. Note / Clarification: By his words "the wife and the servant" - some narrations add "the house" - he means that whoever owns these things is counted a "king".
