It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Abdur-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and some of his companions came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah and said: "O Prophet of Allah! When we were idolaters we were held in honour, but when we believed we became (outwardly) humiliated and disgraced!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded (for now) to pardon, so do not fight, and keep (your hands) restrained." Then (after the emigration to Madinah) Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Have you not seen those who were told: Restrain your hands, establish the prayer and give the zakah? Then when fighting was prescribed for them, at once a party of them feared the people" [Surah an-Nisa: 77].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
