It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from the Ansar invited us (to a meal) before wine was prohibited. Then the time of the Maghrib prayer came, and a man stepped forward (to lead the prayer) and recited Surah "Say: O disbelievers", and he became confused (and mixed it up). Then this verse was revealed: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying" [Surah an-Nisa: 43].
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. There is a great benefit in this hadith: the Khawarij attribute this intoxication and this (mistaken) recitation to the Commander of the Believers, Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), alone, whereas Allah has cleared him of it, for he himself is the narrator of this hadith (and here he is mentioning some other person).

(7406 - 7408). Grading: Its chain is sahih; the narration of Sufyan (al-Thawri) from Ata' is from before his memory deteriorated (ikhtilat). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, there was disagreement over it from him as to who led them in this prayer, as will be explained at narrations (7406 - 7408).
