أخبرنا أبو زكريا العَنبَري، حدثنا محمد بن عبد السلام، حدثنا إسحاق ابن إبراهيم، أخبرنا جَرير، عن عطاء بن السائب، عن سعيد بن جُبَير، عن ابن عبَّاس قال: لما أنزل الله: ﴿وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا مَالَ الْيَتِيمِ إِلَّا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ﴾ [الأنعام: 152]، و ﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَالَ الْيَتَامَى ظُلْمًا إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُونَ فِي بُطُونِهِمْ نَارًا وَسَيَصْلَوْنَ سَعِيرًا﴾ [النساء: 10]، قال: انطَلَق من كان عنده يتيمٌ فعَزَلَ طعامَه من طعامه وشرابَه من شرابه، فجعل يَفضُلُ الشيءُ من طعامه وشرابه فيُحبَس حتى يأكلَه أو يَفْسُدَ، فاشتدَّ ذلك عليهم، فذكروا ذلك للنبيِّ ﷺ، فأنزل الله: ﴿وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْيَتَامَى قُلْ إِصْلَاحٌ لَهُمْ خَيْرٌ وَإِنْ تُخَالِطُوهُمْ فَإِخْوَانُكُمْ﴾ [البقرة:220]، فخَلَطوا طعامَهم بطعامِهم، وشرابَهم بشرابِهم (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: When Allah Almighty revealed these verses, "And do not approach the wealth of the orphan except in the way that is best" [Surah Al-An'am: 152] and "Indeed, those who devour the wealth of orphans unjustly are only filling their bellies with fire, and they will soon burn in a blazing Fire" [Surah Al-Nisa': 10], everyone who had an orphan with him separated his own food and drink from the orphan's food and drink, so that if anything was left over from his food and drink it would be kept aside until either the orphan ate it or it went bad. This situation became very hard on them, so they mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And they ask you about orphans. Say: Improving their condition is best, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers" [Surah Al-Baqarah: 220]. So (after this) the Companions mixed their food and drink with the orphans' food and drink.
