حدَّثَناه أبو بكر بن أبي دارِمٍ الحافظ، حدثنا أحمد بن موسى بن إسحاق التَّميمي، حدثنا مُخوَّل بن إبراهيم النَّهْدي، حدثنا منصور بن وَرْدَان، حدثنا علي ابن عبد الأعلى، عن أبيه، عن أبي البَخْتَرِي، عن علي قال: لما نزلت هذه الآيةُ: ﴿وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا﴾ [آل عمران: 97] قالوا: يا رسول الله، أفي كلِّ عام؟ فَسَكَتَ، ثم قالوا: أفي كلِّ عام؟ فسَكت، ثم قالوا: أفي كلِّ عام؟ قال: "لا، ولو قلتُ: نَعَم، لوَجَبَت"، فأنزل الله ﷿: ﴿يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَسْأَلُوا عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ﴾ [المائدة: 1] (1). قال الحاكم: كان من حُكْم هذه الأحاديث الثلاثة أن تكون مخرَّجةً في أول كتاب المَناسِك، فلم يُقدَّرْ ذلك لي، فخرَّجتُها في تفسير الآية.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: "And (due) to Allah from the people is the pilgrimage to the House, for whoever is able to find a way to it" [Surah Al Imran: 97], the people said: O Messenger of Allah, every year? He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. They asked again: Every year? He (peace and blessings be upon him) again remained silent. They asked a third time: Every year? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, and had I said yes, it would have become obligatory (every year)." Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if they were made plain to you, would displease you." [Surah Al-Ma'idah: 101]
Imam al-Hakim said: These three hadiths ought to have been recorded at the beginning of the Book of the Rites of Hajj, but that was not decreed for me (at the time), so I have recorded them here in the commentary on this verse.

(1) إسناده ضعيف لضعف عبد الأعلى بن عامر الثعلبي والد علي، وأبو البختري -واسمه سعيد بن فيروز- لم يسمع من عليٍّ، وأعلَّه الذهبي في "تلخيصه" بعبد الأعلى.
Grading: Its chain is da'if because of the weakness of Abd al-A'la bin Amir al-Tha'labi (the father of Ali), and Abu al-Bakhtari (whose name is Sa'id bin Fayruz) did not hear from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); al-Dhahabi in his "Talkhis" declared it defective because of Abd al-A'la.
وأخرجه أحمد 2/ (905)، وابن ماجه (2884)، والترمذي (814) و (3055) من طرق عن منصور بن وَرْدان، بهذا الإسناد.
