حدثنا محمد بن صالح بن هانئ، حدثنا الحسين بن الفضل البَجَلي، حدثنا عفّان بن مُسلِم، حدثنا سليمان بن كثير قال: سمعت ابنَ شِهاب يحدِّث عن أبي سِنَان، عن ابن عبَّاس قال: خَطَبَنا رسولُ الله ﷺ فقال: "يا أيها الناس، إنَّ الله كَتَبَ عليكم الحجَّ" فقام الأقرعُ بن حابس فقال: أفي كلِّ عام يا رسول الله؟ قال: "لو قلتها لوَجَبَت، ولو وَجَبَت لم تَعمَلوا بها -أو لم تستطيعوا أن تعملوا بها- الحجُّ مرَّةً، فمن زادَ فتطوُّعٌ" (3).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه. وهكذا رواه سفيان بن حسين الواسطي عن الزُّهري:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us and said: "O people, Allah Almighty has made Hajj obligatory upon you." At this, al-Aqra' bin Habis stood up and asked: O Messenger of Allah, is it (obligatory) every year? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had I said yes, it would have become obligatory (every year), and had it become obligatory, you would not have acted upon it (or: you would not have been able to act upon it). Hajj is (once in a lifetime) only once, and whoever does more than that, it is voluntary."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it; and Sufyan bin Husayn al-Wasiti also narrated it in the same way from al-Zuhri.

(3) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد حسن من أجل سليمان بن كثير، وهو -وإن تُكلِّم في روايته عن ابن شهاب الزهري- قد توبع. أبو سنان: هو يزيد بن أُمية الدؤلي.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is hasan because of Sulayman bin Kathir; although his narration from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri has been criticised, he has been corroborated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Sinan is Yazid bin Umayyah al-Du'ali.
وأخرجه أحمد 4 / (2304) عن عفان بن مسلم بهذا الإسناد. وانظر ما بعده وما سلف برقم (1626).
