Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3173

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he led the people in prayer and recited these verses in it: "Alif Lam Mim. Allah - there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence" [Surah Al Imran: 1 - 2]. Imam Abu Ubayd said: According to the reciters of Makkah and Madinah, the scholars of Kufah and Basrah, and the experts in recitation of Syria and Egypt, all of them, the word is read as "al-Qayyum", and to my knowledge there is no disagreement among them in the recitation of this word. With us too this is the correct recitation, because it fully agrees with the script of the Qur'an and the consensus of the Ummah, even though other readings of it are possible in terms of the Arabic language.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
