Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3171

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The Messenger has believed in what was sent down to him from his Lord" [Surah al-Baqarah: 285], the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And it was his right and fitting for him to believe."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of Abu 'Aqil (Yahya bin al-Mutawakkil);
Technical note / Defect ('illah): moreover it is munqati' (broken), since Yahya bin Abi Kathir saw Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) but did not hear from him, and al-Dhahabi declared it defective in his "Talkhis" on account of this break.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2187) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by what al-Tabari narrated in his "Tafsir" 3/151 with a good (jayyid) chain from Qatadah, who said: It was mentioned to us that when this verse was revealed, the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And it is his due that he should believe";
Grading: and this is mursal.
