Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3170

It is narrated from Salim that when his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse: "And whether you reveal what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it; then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills" [Surah al-Baqarah: 284], tears flowed from his eyes. When news of what he had done reached Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: May Allah Almighty have mercy on Abu Abd al-Rahman! He reacted just as the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reacted when this verse was revealed. Then the verse after it, "it will have the good it has earned and bear the evil it has earned" [Surah al-Baqarah: 286], abrogated it.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih;
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is some criticism (maqal) of Sufyan bin Husayn's narration from al-Zuhri, but something similar to this hadith has been narrated through another route, as will come, so his hadith is authenticated. Al-Busiri declared this chain sahih in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (5642), and Ibn Kathir also declared it sahih in his "Tafsir". Salim is Ibn Abd Allah bin 'Umar, and the kunyah of Ibn 'Umar is Abu Abd al-Rahman.
Reference / Source: Ahmad bin Mani' recorded it in his "Musnad" (as in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (5642)), Ibn Abi Shaybah in 14/7, al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 3/145, al-Mahamili in his "Amali" (the transmission of Ibn Mahdi al-Farisi) (374), al-Nahhas in "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh" pp. 275-276, and Ibn al-Jawzi in "Nawasikh al-Qur'an" 2/312, via Yazid bin Harun, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu 'Ubayd recorded it in "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh" (507) from 'Abbad bin al-'Awwam, from Sufyan bin Husayn, with the same chain.
Reference / Source: Something similar is found with Ahmad in 5/(3070) via Humayd al-A'raj, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Grading: And its chain is sahih.
