Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded charity (zakah). A man brought poor-quality dates (shis). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who brought this?" At that time everything was attributed to the one who brought it. Then this verse was revealed: "And do not aim for the inferior part of it to spend (in the way of Allah), while you yourselves would not take it except with your eyes closed to it" [Surah al-Baqarah: 267]. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade two kinds of dates from being taken in charity: al-ju'rur and lawn al-hubayq. Al-Zuhri said: These two are varieties of the dates of Madinah.
