أخبرني مُكرَم بن أحمد القاضي، حدثنا يحيى بن جعفر بن الزِّبرِقان، حدثنا أبو [أحمد بن الزُّبيري] (1) حدثنا فُضَيل بن مرزوق، حدثني شَقِيق بن عُقْبة العَبْدي، حدثني البَرَاء بن عازب قال: نزلت (حافِظُوا على الصَّلَواتِ وصلاة العصرِ) فقرأناها على عهد رسول الله ﷺ ما شاء أن نقرأها، ثم إنَّ الله نَسَخَها فأنزل: ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾ [البقرة:238]، فقال له رجل: أهي صلاةُ العصر؟ فقال: قد خبَّرتُك كيف نَزَلَت وكيف نَسَخَها الله، والله أعلم (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه!

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: (This verse was first) revealed as: "Guard the prayers, and especially the Asr prayer." So we recited it that way in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for as long as Allah willed. Then Allah Almighty abrogated it and sent down this verse: "Guard all the prayers, and especially the middle prayer" [Surah al-Baqarah: 238]. A man asked him: Does it mean the Asr prayer? He replied: I have told you how it was revealed and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) ما بين المعقوفين مكانه بياض في الأصول، واستدركناه من "السنن الكبرى" للبيهقي 1/ 459 حيث رواه عن المصنف بإسناده ومتنه. ووقع مكانه في "إتحاف المهرة" لابن حجر (2067): حدثنا أبو نعيم، وهو ذهول منه أو سبق قلم.
Note / Clarification: In place of what is between the square brackets there is a blank space in the base manuscripts, and we have supplied it from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 1/459, where he narrated it from the author with his chain and text. In its place in Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (2067) there occurs "Abu Nu'aym narrated to us", which is an oversight or a slip of the pen on his part.
(2) إسناده جيد من أجل فضيل بن مرزوق، فهو صدوق لا بأس به.
Grading: Its chain is good (jayyid) on account of Fudayl bin Marzuq, for he is saduq (truthful) and there is no harm in him.
وأخرجه أحمد 30 / (18673)، ومسلم (630) من طريق يحيى بن آدم، عن فضيل بن مرزوق، بهذا الإسناد. فاستدراك الحاكم له ذهول منه.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in 30/(18673) and Muslim (630) via Yahya bin Adam, from Fudayl bin Marzuq, with this same chain.
Important point: So al-Hakim's including it as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part.
