Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3105

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) (concerning patience in calamity) that he said: How excellent are the two loads, and how excellent is the extra gift! (Then he recited these verses:) "Those who, when a calamity befalls them, say: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). Upon them are blessings from their Lord and mercy." (He said:) These two (blessings and mercy) are the excellent loads (rewards). And "It is they who are the rightly guided" [Surah al-Baqarah: 157] is the excellent extra gift.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. And there is no disagreement among our Imams that Sa'id bin al-Musayyib lived during the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); they differ only about whether he heard from him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih, and the narration of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) - even though there is irsal in it - is a proof (hujjah) according to the expert critics (jahabidhah) among the hadith scholars, and they counted it as though connected (mawsul). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared this chain sahih in "Taghliq al-Ta'liq" 2/ 470.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir refers to 'Ibn Abd al-Hamid', and Mansur refers to 'Ibn al-Mu'tamir'.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 4/ 65 and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1484) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Wahidi recorded it in "al-Tafsir al-Wasit" 1/ 241 via the route of Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from Jarir, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Sa'id bin Mansur recorded it in the Tafsir section of his "Sunan" (233), and via his route al-Bayhaqi in "al-Shu'ab" (9239), from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) - dropping the link of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab -,
Grading: and this is munqati' (disconnected);
Technical note / Defect ('illah): whereas what is preserved (mahfuz) is that Sa'id is mentioned in it.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari mentioned this athar in his "Sahih" in suspended form (mu'allaq) before hadith (1302), without a chain.
Note / Clarification: "Al-'idlan" (with kasrah on the 'ayn) means: two similar things (al-mithlan), and here it refers to the two loads carried on the two sides of a camel.
Note / Clarification: "Al-'ilawah" is what is hung or placed on top of a camel after its load is complete.
