It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with her), one of the early emigrant women, concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, "Seek help through patience and prayer" [Surah al-Baqarah: 153], that she said: (Her husband) Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) fell unconscious, so much so that the people thought his soul had departed and he had breathed his last. His wife Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her) went out (in distress) to the mosque to seek help through the patience and prayer that Allah had commanded. When he came to, he asked: Did I just fall unconscious? They said: Yes. He said: You have spoken the truth. Two angels came to me and said: Come, we will take your case to the Mighty, the Trustworthy (Allah) for judgement. Then another angel said: Take him back, for he is among those for whom Allah wrote felicity while they were in their mothers' wombs, and his sons will benefit from him for as long as Allah wills. So he lived for a month after this incident and then passed away.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that while he was on a journey, news reached him of the death of one of his family members. He (dismounted and) prayed two rak'ahs and then said: We have done what Allah commanded: "Seek help through patience and prayer" [Surah al-Baqarah: 153].
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) (concerning patience in calamity) that he said: How excellent are the two loads, and how excellent is the extra gift! (Then he recited these verses:) "Those who, when a calamity befalls them, say: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). Upon them are blessings from their Lord and mercy." (He said:) These two (blessings and mercy) are the excellent loads (rewards). And "It is they who are the rightly guided" [Surah al-Baqarah: 157] is the excellent extra gift.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. And there is no disagreement among our Imams that Sa'id bin al-Musayyib lived during the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); they differ only about whether he heard from him.
