Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3106

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that this verse, "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 158], was revealed concerning the Ansar. In the Jahiliyyah, when they entered the state of ihram, it was not lawful for them to go between al-Safa and al-Marwah (sa'i). So when we came (to Madinah), they mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and then Allah Almighty revealed this verse.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Something similar, longer than what is here, was recorded by al-Bukhari (1790) and (4495), Muslim (1277), Abu Dawud (1901), Ibn Majah (2986), al-Nasa'i (10942), and Ibn Hibban (3839), via various routes from Hisham bin Urwah with this same chain;
Important point: hence al-Hakim's inclusion of it as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ahmad recorded it in 42/ (25112), al-Bukhari in (1643) and (4861), Muslim in (1277) (261), al-Tirmidhi in (2965), al-Nasa'i in (3946) and (3947), and Ibn Hibban in (3840), via the route of Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Urwah, with this same chain.
