It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) (Asim says:) I asked him about al-Safa and al-Marwah, and he said: They were among the rites of the Jahiliyyah, and when Islam came we held back (from going between them). Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs Umrah, there is no blame upon him for going between them. And whoever does good voluntarily" [Surah al-Baqarah: 158].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain is 'good' (jayyid) because of al-Husayn bin Hafs. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan refers to 'al-Thawri', and Asim refers to 'Ibn Sulayman al-Ahwal'. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded it in (4496) and al-Tirmidhi in (2966), via two routes from Sufyan with this same chain; Important point: hence al-Hakim's inclusion of it as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari also recorded something similar in (1648), Muslim in (1278), and al-Nasa'i in (3945), via various routes from Asim al-Ahwal with this same chain.
