Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3030

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was speaking about the period when revelation paused. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I said (to my family): Cover me with a cloth, cover me with a cloth. Then Allah Almighty revealed these verses: 'O you who are wrapped in a cloak! Arise and warn, and magnify your Lord, and purify your garments, and keep away from ar-rujz.'" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said that it means the idols. [Surah al-Muddaththir: 1-5]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with these words.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 23/ (15035) and al-Bukhari (4925) narrated it by way of Abd al-Razzaq with this same chain, with a longer text than the one here.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 22/ (14483), al-Bukhari (3238) and (4926), and Muslim (161) (256) recorded it by way of 'Uqayl bin Khalid; Muslim (161) (255) by way of Yunus bin Yazid; and al-Nasa'i (11567) by way of al-Layth bin Sa'd. All three ('Uqayl, Yunus, al-Layth) narrate from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Uqayl stated explicitly in his narration that the one who explained "al-rujz" as idols is Abu Salamah. Likewise al-Layth, except that what is most likely regarding this narration of al-Layth with al-Nasa'i is that it is from 'Uqayl himself, as it is with others.

Important point: Rather, the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did record it with this, but from the hadith of 'Uqayl from al-Zuhri, as mentioned above; so the author's including it as a supplement to them (istidrak) is an oversight on the part of the author (al-Hakim).
