It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite this blessed verse with a dammah on the ra: "wa ar-rujza fahjur", and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means the idols." [Surah al-Muddaththir: 5]

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (weak) because of weakness in Muhammad bin Kathir al-Massisi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The apparent sense of this narration is that the explanation of "al-rujz" as "idols" is a marfu' statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but that is not so; rather, the one who said "hiya al-awthan" (they are the idols) is actually Abu Salamah, as will be pointed out in the next narration.
