حدثني أحمد بن منصور الحافظ بالطابَرَانِ، حدثنا الحسن بن علي بن نَصْر، حدثنا أبو حاتم سهل بن محمد، حدثنا يحيى بن زكريا بن أبي الحَوَاجب الكوفي قال: كنتُ آخِذًا بيد الأعمشِ ويوسفُ السَّمْتي على الجانب الآخر، فسأله عن قوله ﷿: ﴿وَالرُّجْزَ﴾ [المدثر: 5]، فقال: أخذتَ في ذا؟ ثم قال: قرأتُ القرآن على يحيى بن وَثَّاب ثلاثين مرة، وقرأ يحيى على عَلقَمة، وقرأ علقمةُ على عبد الله، وقرأ عبدُ الله على رسول الله ﷺ: (والرِّجْزَ فاهجُرْ)، بكسر الراء (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he recited before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the word "ar-rijz" in the noble verse "And keep away from filth" with a kasrah on the ra. [Surah al-Muddaththir: 5]
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) إسناده ضعيف لضعف يحيى بن زكريا بن أبي الحواجب.
Grading: Its chain is da'if because Yahya bin Zakariyya bin Abi al-Hawajib in it is weak.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الأوسط" (1224)، و "الصغير" (87)، وابن شاهين في الخامس من "أفراده" (49) من طريقين عن أبي حاتم سهل بن محمد السجستاني، بهذا الإسناد ـ وليس فيه عند الطبراني ذكر القراءة، ووقع عند ابن شاهين: (الرُّجز) بالضم. وهو وهمٌ، فقد اشتهر عن الأعمش أنه قرأها بالكسر، كما ذكر الفراء في "معاني القرآن" 3/ 200، وهي قراءة جمهور القَرَأة، وقرأ حفص عن عاصم من بين السبعة بضم الراء. انظر "السبعة" لابن مجاهد ص 659.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awsat" (1224) and "al-Saghir" (87), and Ibn Shahin in the fifth part of his "Afrad" (49), by two routes from Abu Hatim Sahl bin Muhammad al-Sijistani, with this same chain. In al-Tabarani's version the reading is not mentioned, and in Ibn Shahin's the word appears as (الرُّجز) with dammah on the ra'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This (reading with dammah) is a mistake, for it is well known from al-A'mash that he read it with kasrah, as al-Farra' mentioned in "Ma'ani al-Qur'an" 3/ 200, and this is the reading of the majority of the reciters. Among the Seven, only Hafs, narrating from 'Asim, read it with dammah on the ra'. (See Ibn Mujahid's "al-Sab'ah", p. 659.)
