Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2972

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm al-Ash'ari that he said: I asked Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) about this saying of the disciples, "hal yastati'u rabbuka" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 112] "Is your Lord able", or (I asked whether it is) "hal tastati'u rabbaka"? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me to recite "hal tastati'u", that is, with "ta'".
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading of the chain: This chain is "talif" (ruined). Muhammad bin Sa'id (al-Shami al-Maslub) is "halik" (utterly worthless) and accused of lying, and Bakr bin Khunays is "da'if".
Reference / Source: Abu 'Umar al-Duri ("Qira'at al-Nabi (peace and blessings be upon him)", 42) narrated it from al-Kisa'i. Al-Kisa'i said: More than one narrator told me from Muhammad bin Sa'id, and then he mentioned it with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2930) and al-Tabarani ("al-Kabir" 20/ 128, "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" 2244) narrated it via Rishdin bin Sa'd, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ziyad bin An'um al-Ifriqi, from 'Utbah bin Humayd, from 'Ubadah bin Nusayy.
Statement of al-Tirmidhi and examination: Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "gharib"; we know it only from the hadith of Rishdin, and its chain is "not strong". Rishdin and al-Ifriqi are both regarded as weak in hadith.
We say: Likewise, there is weakness in 'Utbah.
Reading (al-Kisa'i): Al-Kisa'i alone among the seven readers read: (هل تستطيع ربَّك), meaning: O 'Isa, are you able to ask your Lord? Or: are you capable of the asking of your Lord? So "asking" was omitted and its grammatical case was put on the word after it (Rabb), making it accusative (with fatha), just as Allah says: ﴿وَاسْأَلِ الْقَرْيَةَ﴾ meaning: ask "the people of the town". ("Hujjat al-Qira'at", p. 241.)
