It is narrated from Abdullah bin Buraydah that Abu al-Aswad al-Dili and Jubayr bin Hayyah al-Thaqafi were with Ubaydullah bin Ziyad. They mentioned this word of the Qur'an, "laqad taqatta'a baynakum" [Surah al-An'am: 94], until they placed wagers (on the correct vowelling). Aslam bin Zur'ah said: I heard Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reciting "laqad taqatta'a baynakum" (with nasb). Then one of them said: Let the first person who comes in to us judge between me and you. Just then Yahya bin Ya'mar came in, and they asked him about it. Yahya said: This word is "laqad taqatta'a baynukum", with raf' (dammah). Then Yahya said: Abu Musa is not from the people of the lowlands (so there may be a difference in his dialect), and I do not accuse him (of misreporting) either.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(2) في المطبوع: الغرر، براءين. والمثبت من النسخ الخطية، ولعله أراد أنه ليس من أهل التعمُّق في معرفة القراءات ومعانيها، والله تعالى أعلم. Correction of the text: The printed edition has "al-gharar" (with two ra's); the correct word has been established from the manuscripts. Perhaps what is meant is that he was not among those with deep knowledge of the readings and their meanings. And Allah knows best.
(3) إسناده قوي. ¤ ¤ والأخطار: جمع الخَطَر، وهو السَّبق يتراهن عليه. Grading of the chain: Its chain is "qawi" (strong). Linguistic meaning: "Al-akhtar" is the plural of "khatar", which is the prize/stake over which a wager is made. وقرأ (بينُكم) رفعًا على أنه فاعلٌ ابنُ كثير وأبو عمرو وابن عامر وحمزة وعاصم في رواية أبي بكر عنه، وقرأها (بينَكم) نصبًا على أنه ظرفٌ نافعٌ والكسائي وحفص عن عاصم. انظر "السبعة" لابن مجاهد ص 263. Readings: (بينُكم) with raf' (damma), as the subject, was read by Ibn Kathir, Abu 'Amr, Ibn 'Amir, Hamzah and 'Asim (in the transmission of Abu Bakr). And (بينَكم) with nasb (fatha), as an adverb, was read by Nafi', al-Kisa'i and Hafs from 'Asim. ("al-Sab'ah", p. 263.)
