It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man from the tribe of Banu Sulaym passed by a group of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he had his sheep with him. He greeted them with salam. The Companions said (among themselves): He has greeted you only to save himself from you. So they went for him, killed him and took his sheep, then brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "O you who believe, when you go forth in the way of Allah, investigate, and do not say to one who offers you a greeting of peace, 'You are not a believer'" [Surah al-Nisa: 94], up to His saying: "You yourselves were like that before, then Allah conferred His favour upon you, so investigate" [Surah al-Nisa: 94].
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
52. Identification of the narrator (correction): In the manuscripts the name is written "Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Mihran", with the addition of "Muhammad", which has been wrongly inserted here. The correct name is in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 115), where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim) with his chain and text, and it is likewise correct in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (8578). The narration of this teacher occurs with al-Hakim in dozens of hadiths without "Muhammad". He is "Ahmad bin Mihran bin Khalid Abu Ja'far al-Asbahani" ("Akhbar Asbahan" 1/ 95; Ibn Hibban's "al-Thiqat" 8/ 48, 52).
Grading of the hadith and chain: The hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "hasan" in corroborating chains and supporting reports, because of what has been said about "idtirab" (inconsistency) in the narration of Simak (Ibn Harb) from 'Ikrimah. This hadith has also been narrated through another route, as will come. Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/ 2023, 4/ 2462, 5/ 2986), al-Tirmidhi (3030) and Ibn Hibban (4752) narrated it via various routes from Isra'il, with this same chain. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan". Origin of the hadith: The basis of this hadith has been narrated in similar form via 'Amr bin Dinar, from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Ibn 'Abbas. (11051). Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (4591), Muslim (3025) and al-Nasa'i (8536, 11051) narrated it.
