It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me seventy surahs, which I had mastered even before Zayd bin Thabit accepted Islam.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Examining the name: In manuscripts (S, A, B) it is "Sa'id" (with ya'), and this is also correct. In "Tahdhib al-Kamal" by al-Hafiz al-Mizzi it is stated that he was called both "Abu Sa'd" and "Abu Sa'id". He is "al-Azdi" (of Azd Shanu'ah); the "z" (in al-Azdi) is also pronounced as a sakin "s" (al-Asdi).
Grading of the hadith and chain: It is "sahih" due to the preceding narration, and this chain is "hasan" on account of Abu Sa'd al-Azdi (more than one narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat"). Abu Qilabah is Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad al-Raqashi and Abu 'Awanah is Waddah al-Yashkuri. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn 'Asakir ("Tarikh Dimashq" 33/ 137) via al-Bayhaqi from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani ("al-Kabir" 8439) (and from him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 125) and Ibn Abi Dawud ("al-Masahif" 61) (and via him Ibn 'Asakir 33/ 137), by two routes from Yahya bin Hammad.
