(1). Hammad bin Zayd said: I asked Ayyub: Do you know of anyone who held the same view as al-Hasan (al-Basri) concerning «amruki bi-yadiki» ("your matter is in your hand"), that it counts as three (divorces)? He said: No, except something that Qatadah narrated to us from Kathir, the freed slave of Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah, from Abu Salamah, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to the same effect. Ayyub said: When Kathir came to us, I asked him, and he said: "I have never narrated this hadith." I mentioned this to Qatadah, and he said: "Of course (he narrated it), but he has now forgotten."
This is a gharib and sahih hadith from the narration of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani. In the Book of Marriage, in the chapter "Marriage without a guardian", I have mentioned the names of trustworthy hadith scholars, Companions and Successors, who narrated a hadith and then forgot it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah) except "Kathir, the mawla of Abd al-Rahman" (who is Ibn Abi Kathir al-Basri); a group narrated from him, al-'Ijli declared him trustworthy and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", but he is "alone" (munfarid) in narrating this hadith. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bukhari declared it defective on the grounds of its being "mawquf" (al-Tirmidhi, al-Jami' and al-'Ilal al-Kabir: 300), because al-Bukhari narrated it from Sulayman bin Harb as mawquf. And al-Nasa'i, in "al-Mujtaba" (3410), declared it defective on the grounds of "nakarah" (being munkar). Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2204) recorded it from al-Hasan bin Ali al-Khallal; and al-Tirmidhi (1178) and al-Nasa'i (5573) from Ali bin Nasr bin Ali al-Jahdami. Both of them narrate it from Sulayman bin Harb with this same chain as "marfu'". (300). Reference / Source: And al-Tirmidhi narrated it after (1178) from Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari, from Sulayman bin Harb, as "mawquf", as the narration of "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (300) makes clear.
Note / Clarification: This is how al-Hakim mentioned it! Yet at the place he referred to, there is only a mention of al-Zuhri having narrated the hadith "There is no marriage except with a guardian" and then forgotten it (after narration 2743). Perhaps he had written a detailed discussion there and then removed it. This is a branch of the sciences of hadith on which separate books have been written, such as the books of al-Daraqutni and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, both titled "Man Haddatha wa Nasiya" (One who narrated a hadith and then forgot it).
