Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2835

It is narrated from Abu Abdur-Rahman al-Sulami that a man came to Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "My mother kept after me until I married, and now she orders me to divorce her." He said: "I am not the one to order you to disobey your mother, nor do I order you to divorce your wife. However, if you wish, I will tell you the hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: 'The father (parents) is the middle gate of Paradise.' Now it is your choice whether to guard that gate or to lose it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqat), but Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (Abd Allah bin Habib) did not hear this hadith from Abu al-Darda'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Sufyan al-Thawri and Hammad bin Zayd makes this clear (both of them heard from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib before his memory deteriorated); they said in their narration: "this man travelled to Abu al-Darda' in Syria". It is known that Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami is nowhere mentioned as having travelled to Syria; he stayed in Kufa and died there. So the man mentioned is the one who informed him of Abu al-Darda''s fatwa, and he is an "unnamed" (mubham) person who is not identified. We have not found any scholar who drew attention to this; rather, some declared the hadith sahih. Perhaps that is because Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami is one of the senior Successors, so his "mursal" is accepted, like that of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib from 'Umar bin al-Khattab, for example. And Allah knows best. Isma'il (in the chain) is "Ibn 'Ulayyah".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (425) narrated it via Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb, from Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (36/ 21726) via Sharik al-Nakha'i, and (45/ 27511 and 27528) via Sufyan al-Thawri; both from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, likewise.
Details of the narration: This narration will come later at no. (7438) via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah and at no. (7439) via Shu'bah, both from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib.
Details of the narration: Hammad bin Zayd narrated it in detail and clearly, like the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri, found with Abu Muhammad al-Baghawi in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (3421), and Hammad bin Zayd is among those who heard from 'Ata' before his memory became confused (ikhtilat).
