It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Ali, do not follow one glance with another, for the first glance is (forgiven) for you, but you have no right to the second."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to supporting evidence).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is "hasan" in corroborations and supporting reports because it contains Sharik (Ibn Abd Allah al-Nakha'i) and Abu Rabi'ah al-Iyadi ('Umar bin Rabi'ah). Moreover, Sharik also narrated it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, pairing him (maqrun) with Abu Rabi'ah. Abu Nu'aym (in the chain) is "al-Fadl bin Dukayn", and Abu Ghassan is "Malik bin Isma'il".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (38/ 22974) from Waki', (22991) from Hashim bin al-Qasim, and (23021) from Ahmad bin Abd al-Malik al-Harrani; Abu Dawud (2149) from Isma'il bin Musa al-Fazari; and al-Tirmidhi (2777) from 'Ali bin Hujr. All five narrate it from Sharik al-Nakha'i, with this chain. In the narration of Ahmad bin Abd al-Malik al-Harrani, Sharik paired "Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i" with Abu Rabi'ah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is also a narration from 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) himself, which will come with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (4673), and there is "weakness" in it.
