Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2812

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people passed by us who were setting out (on a mission). We asked them: "Where are you going?" They said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent us to a man who has married his father's wife, so that we may kill him."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih", in sha' Allah. The narrators of this chain are trustworthy (thiqat) except al-Rabi' bin al-Rukayn; Shu'bah and Marwan bin Mu'awiyah (al-Fazari) narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". He is corroborated in the previous route; see the details there.

Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (7183) narrated it from Yahya bin Hakim al-Basri, from Muhammad bin Ja'far, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But its editor wrote "al-Rukayn bin al-Rabi'" in the chain instead of "al-Rabi' bin al-Rukayn", although it was correct in the manuscript; this happened because he was misled by al-Mizzi's statement (in "al-Tuhfah"). This is a mistake of al-Mizzi (may Allah have mercy on him), which he carried through in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" and "al-Tuhfah". A number of scholars (such as Abu Zur'ah and al-Daraqutni) referred to this narration and gave the correct name as "al-Rabi' bin al-Rukayn". Al-Mizzi's mistake gives the false impression that the chain is sahih, because (the father) al-Rukayn is thiqah, whereas his son (al-Rabi') is below the rank of thiqah.
