It is narrated from Sayyiduna Iyas bin Abdullah bin Abi Dhubab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not strike the female servants of Allah (women)." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the women have become emboldened against their husbands." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave permission to strike them (by way of discipline). After that, many women gathered around the household of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), complaining about their husbands. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Many women have gathered around the household of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), complaining about their husbands. (Remember,) those men (who beat their wives) are not the best among you."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

(1) إسناده صحيح. إياس بن عبد الله بن أبي ذباب، أثبت صحبته أبو حاتم وأبو زرعة، وجزم به أبو عمر بن عبد البر، ورجّح الحافظ صحبته في "التهذيب"، وصحَّح إسناد حديثه هذا في "الإصابة" 2/ 280، ونفى صحبته أحمد بن حنبل والبخاري، واختلف فيه قول ابن حبان، فأثبته مرة ونفاه أخرى.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The Companionship of (the narrator) Iyas bin 'Abdullah bin Abi Dhubab was affirmed by Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah, and Abu 'Umar Ibn 'Abd al-Barr stated it with certainty. Al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) preferred his Companionship in "al-Tahdhib" and declared the chain of this hadith of his sahih in "al-Isabah" (2/ 280). Whereas Ahmad bin Hanbal and al-Bukhari denied his Companionship, and Ibn Hibban's position on this varies: once he affirmed it and another time he denied it.
عبيد الله بن عبد الله: هو ابن عمر بن الخطاب.
Note / Clarification: 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abdullah (in the chain) refers to "'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar bin al-Khattab".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2146) recorded it from Ahmad bin Abi Khalaf and Ahmad bin 'Amr bin al-Sarh; Ibn Majah (1985) from Muhammad bin al-Sabbah; and al-Nasa'i (9122) from Qutaybah bin Sa'id. These four narrators narrate it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah with this same chain.
Details of the narration: But Ibn Abi Khalaf, Qutaybah and Ibn al-Sabbah named him in their narrations as "'Abdullah bin 'Abdullah" (in the non-diminutive form) (instead of 'Ubaydullah), and he too is "thiqah" like his brother 'Ubaydullah.
وأخرجه ابن حبان (4189) من طريق معمر، عن الزُّهْري، عن عبد الله بن عبد الله، به. وذكره بالتكبير أيضًا.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (4189) narrated it likewise through the route of Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from 'Abdullah bin 'Abdullah, and he too gave the name in the non-diminutive form ('Abdullah).
وسيأتي برقم (2809) عن أبي بكر بن إسحاق عن بشر بن موسى.
Note / Clarification: And this narration will come later at number (2809) from Abu Bakr bin Ishaq from Bishr bin Musa.
ذئرن: معناه: سوء الخُلُق والجرأة على الأزواج، والذائر: المغتاظ على خصمه. وقد عبّر هنا بقوله: ذئرن، على لغة من يقول: أكلوني البراغيث.
Note / Clarification: "ذئرن" means: bad character and boldness towards husbands. "Al-dha'ir" is someone filled with anger against his opponent. Here the word "ذئرن" (in the feminine plural form) is used according to the dialect of "أكلوني البراغيث" (in which both the verb and the subject are made plural).
