It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Kulthum bint Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), he said to her: "I have sent some uqiyahs of musk and a hullah (garment) as a gift to the Negus (al-Najashi), and I think he has already died, and I expect that the gift I sent will be returned. So if it comes back to me, it will be yours (or: for all of you)." And it happened just as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: the Negus died, and when the gift was returned to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave each of his pure wives one uqiyah of that musk, and gave the rest of the musk and the hullah to Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(2240). Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts we have, "أواقا" appears (instead of awaqi); and this is permissible according to the dialect of some Arabs, as has been explained under number (2240).
Note / Clarification: It is thus in al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", whereas the manuscripts have "أم لكم". In al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/ 26), in the narration from al-Hakim, "أو لكن" appears, and this is a doubt on the part of the narrator, as is made clear by al-Bayhaqi's narration in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (11641) from al-Hakim through another chain (from Muslim bin Khalid), in which the narrator said: "فهي لك" (so it is for you) or said: "لكن" (for you women).
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "da'if" because of the weakness of "Muslim bin Khalid" (who is al-Zanji). Technical note / Defect ('illah): He is alone (tafarrud) in narrating it from Musa bin 'Uqbah, and he fell into "inconsistency" (idtirab) in mentioning the mother of Musa bin 'Uqbah. Sometimes he says: "from his mother, from Umm Kulthum", as is the case here with the author (al-Hakim); and sometimes he says: "from his mother Umm Kulthum", thereby making Umm Kulthum his mother. Ibn Wahb (in the chain) refers to "'Abdullah bin Wahb". Reference / Source: Ahmad (45/ 27276) recorded it from Yazid bin Harun, and Ibn Hibban (5114) through the route of Hisham bin 'Ammar; both of them narrate it from Muslim bin Khalid with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (27276) narrated it likewise from Husayn bin Muhammad, from Muslim bin Khalid, from Musa bin 'Uqbah, from his mother Umm Kulthum.
