Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2798

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I went to al-Hirah (a city in Iraq) and saw the people there prostrating to one of their chiefs (a marzuban). I said (to myself): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is more deserving of being prostrated to. So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I went to al-Hirah and saw those people prostrating to their chief, yet you, O Messenger of Allah, are more deserving of being prostrated to." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think, if you passed by my grave, would you prostrate to it?" I said: "No." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then do not do so. If I were to command anyone to prostrate to another human being, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands, because of the great right that Allah has given them (the men) over them (the women)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "hasan" because of "Sharik" (Ibn 'Abdullah al-Nakha'i al-Qadi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group other than al-Fadl bin Muhammad narrated this hadith from 'Amr bin 'Awn, and they added a man between Ibn 'Awn and Sharik, namely "Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq", who is "thiqah". That is how it came in their narrations, even though 'Amr bin 'Awn also has a direct narration from Sharik in which he explicitly states that he heard from him. So if the narration with the author (al-Hakim) is "mahfuz" (preserved), it is possible that 'Amr bin 'Awn first heard it through Ishaq al-Azraq, then met Sharik and heard it from him (directly); or that he heard it from Sharik al-Nakha'i and had it confirmed through Ishaq al-Azraq, so he narrated it in both ways. There are many parallels to this. And Allah knows best. Husayn (in the chain) refers to "Husayn bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami", and al-Sha'bi refers to "'Amir bin Sharahil".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2140) narrated it likewise from 'Amr bin 'Awn, from Ishaq bin Yusuf, from Sharik al-Nakha'i.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Dawud was matched in mentioning Ishaq al-Azraq by al-Darimi in his "Musnad" (1504), by Muhammad bin Sulayman al-Baghandi with al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (1487), by 'Ali bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Baghawi with al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (18/ 895), and by others.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone, I would command women" (to the end of the saying) is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Tirmidhi (1193) and Ibn Hibban (4162); al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan", and it is (hasan) as he said.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: There is also (a shahid of the same meaning in) the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Ibn Abi al-Dunya's "al-Nafaqah 'ala al-'Iyal" (539) and in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (12003), and its chain is "qawi" (strong).

Note / Clarification: "Al-Hirah" was a city three miles from Kufah, which was conquered in 12 AH.
Note / Clarification: And "marzuban" refers to a brave horseman who is placed at the head of the people, below the king, and this word is arabicized (mu'arrab).
