It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that even after this verse was revealed: 'You may put aside whichever of them you wish and take to yourself whichever you wish' [Surah al-Ahzab: 51], the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (out of the perfection of his character) would still ask our permission, on the day of one of us, to go to another. Mu'adhah said: I asked Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "What reply did you use to give to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" She said: "I used to say: If this decision rests with me, I will not prefer anyone else over myself."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain of this hadith is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Asim (in the chain) refers to "'Asim bin Sulayman al-Ahwal", and 'Abbad bin 'Abbad refers to "al-Muhallabi". Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2136) narrated it from Yahya bin Ma'in with this same chain. Reference / Source: Muslim (1476), Abu Dawud (2136), al-Nasa'i (8887) and Ibn Hibban (4206) narrated it likewise through various routes from 'Abbad bin 'Abbad. Reference / Source: Ahmad (41/ 24476), al-Bukhari (4789) and Muslim (1476) recorded it likewise through the route of 'Abdullah bin al-Mubarak, from 'Asim al-Ahwal. Note / Clarification: Therefore al-Hakim's including it as an addition (istidrak), claiming that al-Bukhari and Muslim did not narrate it, is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part.
