It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people and then said: "O people, keep (the amount of) women's dowries small, for if large dowries were a matter of piety with Allah and of honour and nobility in this world, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would have been the most deserving of it. Yet we do not know of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) having given any of his pure wives a dowry of more than twelve uqiyah; one uqiyah is forty dirhams, so these (twelve uqiyah) come to four hundred and eighty dirhams, and that was the highest dowry the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave. So let me not find anyone who has fixed a dowry of more than four hundred dirhams."

Grading: This narration is "sahih" (on the strength of its supporting reports). Technical note / Defect ('illah): This particular isnad is "da'if" from the side of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (al-'Umari), but from the side of Ibn Abi Rawwad there is no harm in it. However, there is a disagreement from Ibn Abi Rawwad over whether it is "muttasil" or "mursal": Abu Qurrah (Musa bin Tariq) narrated it as "muttasil", while 'Abd al-Razzaq and Waki' bin al-Jarrah contradicted him and narrated it as Nafi' from 'Umar, "mursal" (without mentioning Ibn 'Umar), and this "mursal" version is closer to the truth (ashbah), because the chain to Abu Qurrah has some weakness. Important point: Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (241) that this hadith is not authentically established (with this chain) from anyone except Abu al-'Ajfa'. Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Abu Humah" refers to Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Zubaydi. Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in the "Musannaf" (10401), and Ibn Abi Shaybah (6/ 175) narrated it via Waki' bin al-Jarrah. Details of the narration: Both of them narrate it from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abi Rawwad, from Nafi', as "mursal"; Waki''s narration is abridged, and both of them mention "400 dirhams" instead of "480 dirhams". Reference / Source: The narration concerning the value of the dowry that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give was narrated by al-Bazzar (158) and al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (5042, 5044) through the chain of Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar.
