It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people and said: "O people, do not go to excess in the dowries of women, for if this were a matter of honour (in this world), none of you would have been more deserving or more fitting for it than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (The fact is that) he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not set the dowry of any of his wives or daughters at more than twelve uqiyah." And one uqiyah is forty dirhams, except for the dowry that al-Najashi paid on his (peace and blessings be upon him) behalf in the land of Abyssinia (for Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her)), which was four hundred dinars.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its isnad is "da'if" because it contains 'Isa bin Maymun (al-Madani, known as al-Wasiti), who is a weak narrator, as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis"; indeed, some hadith scholars abandoned him. Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil" (5/ 240) through the chain of 'Abdan bin Ahmad al-Ahwazi and Muhammad bin 'Abdah bin Harb, from Shayban bin Farrukh, with this same isnad. Note / Clarification: In place of this narration, the preceding narration of Abu al-'Ajfa' from 'Umar suffices (which carries the same meaning). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The story of the Negus, King of Abyssinia, is supported by the hadith of Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) that will come later at number (2776) with a sahih isnad; she herself is the central figure of this story, whose dowry the Negus paid. Note / Clarification: However, there four thousand (dirhams) are mentioned, which amount to approximately four hundred dinars.
