Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 275

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was taken up to the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, and there were four rivers: two visible and two hidden. The visible rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates, and the hidden ones are two rivers in Paradise. Then three cups were brought to me: one of milk, one of honey and one of wine. I took the cup that contained milk and drank it, and it was said to me: You and your Ummah have attained the fitrah (natural disposition)."
Imam al-Hakim says: I asked my Shaykh why the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. He replied that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) did not hear it directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) but from Malik bin Sa'sa'ah. I (al-Hakim) say: I examined it and found that the words he heard from Malik bin Sa'sa'ah are different from these. The student should know that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) heard part of the hadith of the Mi'raj from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), part from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, part from Malik bin Sa'sa'ah and part from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them).
