It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no marriage without a guardian."
All of these chains are sahih (authentic), and these narrations have reached us from Isra'il with a high (short) chain. The eminent early Imams through whom we transmit the narrations of Isra'il, such as Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, Waki', Yahya bin Adam, Yahya bin Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah and others, also narrated it as connected, and they all judged this hadith to be sahih.
I heard Abu Nasr Ahmad bin Sahl al-Faqih in Bukhara saying: I heard Salih bin Muhammad bin Habib al-Hafiz saying: I heard Ali bin Abdullah al-Madini saying: I heard Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi saying: "Isra'il used to memorize the hadith of his grandfather Abu Ishaq just as he memorized 'al-Hamd' (Surah al-Fatihah)."
I heard Abu al-Hasan bin Mansur saying: I heard Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ishaq saying: I heard Abu Musa saying: "Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi used to affirm and authenticate the hadith narrated by Isra'il from Abu Ishaq, that is, the hadith concerning marriage without a guardian."
Hatim bin Yunus al-Jurjani said: I asked Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi: What is your view about marriage without a guardian? He replied: "It is not permissible." I said: What is the evidence for that? He said: "Qays bin al-Rabi' narrated it to us from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Burdah, from his father (Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with him)." I said: But Sufyan al-Thawri and Shu'bah narrate it as mursal (without mentioning the Companion in the chain). He said: "Indeed, Isra'il has corroborated Qays (in narrating it with a connected chain)."
Ali bin al-Madini said: "The hadith of Isra'il (concerning) 'There is no marriage without a guardian' is sahih (authentic)."
Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Imam said: I asked Muhammad bin Yahya about this chapter, and he said: "In my view the hadith of Isra'il is sahih (authentic)." I said to him: Sharik has also narrated it? He asked: Who narrated it (from him)? I said: Ali bin Hujr narrated it to us. And I mentioned to him the hadith of Yunus bin Abi Ishaq and of some of the other narrators who narrated it from Abu Ishaq. Then I said to him: Shu'bah and al-Thawri narrated it from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Burdah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, the two of them narrated it this way, but they (the hadith scholars) would at times narrate a hadith as mursal, until when they were asked "From whom?" they would then narrate it with a connected (musnad) chain.
Uthman bin Sa'id al-Darimi says: I asked Yahya bin Ma'in: "Who is dearer to you, Yunus bin Abi Ishaq or his son Isra'il bin Yunus?" He replied: "Both of them are thiqah (trustworthy)."
