It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How will you be at that time - or: a time is about to come - when people will be thoroughly sifted (through trials) and only the dregs of people will remain, whose covenants and trusts will have become corrupted, and they will differ among themselves and become like this," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) showed it by interlacing the fingers of his two hands. The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the ruling for us at that time? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take what you recognize (that is, what is known to be right and sound) and leave what you disapprove of (that is, what is objectionable and wrong), and attend to the affairs of your own particular people (your close ones, or your particular religious affairs), and leave the affair of the common people (with its crowds and trials)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording. [Beginning of the Book of Marriage]

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Textual correction: The words "kayfa bikum wa-zaman aw" in the text have been corrected in the light of Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis's book "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1467), where he narrated it via Yahya bin Muhammad (bin Sa'id) from Bahr bin Nasr al-Khawlani, and it is similar in the other sources.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and its narrators are thiqah. Technical note / Chain analysis: What is preserved (mahfuz) in this chain is that there is an intermediary, "Abu Hazim Salamah bin Dinar", between Ya'qub bin 'Abd al-Rahman (al-Iskandarani) and 'Umarah bin Hazm ('Umarah bin 'Amr bin Hazm), as established by the narration of Sa'id bin Mansur (coming with the author (al-Hakim) at 8544), the narration of Sa'id bin Kathir bin 'Ufayr with al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (1177), the narration of 'Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, with al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (13654/5) and (14589), and the narration of Qutaybah bin Sa'id with Abu al-'Abbas al-Mustaghfiri in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (279). It is also established in the narration of Yahya bin Muhammad bin Sa'id from Bahr bin Nasr with Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1467). Important point: It is impossible for Ya'qub to have heard directly from 'Umarah bin Hazm, because there are more than 100 years between their deaths. Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (4342) and Ibn Majah (3957) narrated it via 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abi Hazim from his father (Abu Hazim) from 'Umarah bin Hazm. Technical note / Variation in the chain: Muhammad bin Mutarrif al-Madani contradicted Ya'qub and 'Abd al-'Aziz, narrating it with the chain "Abu Hazim from 'Amr bin Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather" (Musnad Ahmad: 11/7049). However, the version of Ya'qub and 'Abd al-'Aziz is closer to being correct, although it is possible that the hadith is preserved through both chains. And Allah knows best. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in his "Musnad" (11/6508) via al-Hasan al-Basri from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both). Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari recorded part of it (hadith number 478) via Waqid bin Muhammad al-'Umari from his father from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr. Note: This hadith will come again later at number (8544) via Sa'id bin Mansur from Ya'qub from Abu Hazim from 'Umarah bin 'Amr bin Hazm (from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr). Note: This narration will also come later at numbers (7951) and (8813) via 'Ikrimah from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr. (5553). Note: See also the hadith of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) which will come later at number (5553). Linguistic clarification: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "yugharbalu al-nasu ghurbalah" means: "people will be sifted (as through a sieve)", i.e. the good people will depart and only the base and worthless will remain. "Al-Mugharbal" is something that has been selected and separated out, as though it had been cleaned with a "ghirbal" (sieve). Linguistic clarification: The word "al-Huthalah" (dregs) means the worthless or inferior part of anything. Linguistic clarification: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "marijat" (their covenants and trusts became muddled) means: "became mixed up and corrupted". Important point: The meaning of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "Attend to your own particular affairs and leave the affairs of the common people" is: hold fast to reforming yourselves, guard your religion, and leave (misguided) people to their state and do not follow them. Legal point: This is a concession to leave enjoining good and forbidding evil when evil people become many and the righteous become weak.
