It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed me in charge of "the fifth of the fifth" (the management of the fifth share), so I spent it in its proper places during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and during the lifetimes of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is "hasan". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ja'far al-Razi ('Isa bin Abi 'Isa) is saduq and his narration is taken into consideration, but according to Imam al-Daraqutni (al-'Ilal: 405), Abu 'Awanah al-Waddah (who is thiqah and a proof) contradicted him. Abu 'Awanah narrated it from Mutarrif, from a man called "Kathir", from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla. According to 'Ali bin al-Madini and al-Daraqutni this "Kathir" is majhul, and Mutarrif's hearing from Ibn Abi Layla is not established. Clarification: Al-Hafiz Abu Zur'ah Ibn al-'Iraqi and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar raised the possibility that the "Kathir" mentioned is actually Kathir bin 'Ubayd (the foster brother of 'A'ishah). If this is correct, Abu 'Awanah's chain will be "hasan". Moreover, this report is also narrated from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla through another route, which will come later. (4394). Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (2983) narrated it with the chain of Yahya bin Abi Bukayr from Abu Ja'far al-Razi, and this same route will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (4394). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Dawud (2984) narrated it by way of Husayn bin Maymun, in which 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I said: O Messenger of Allah! If you see fit, entrust to me our right to the khumus mentioned in the Book of Allah, so that I may distribute it during your lifetime and no one disputes with me after you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did so." Husayn bin Maymun is taken into consideration in corroborations and supporting reports, and he has been corroborated as well. Linguistic clarification: "Khams al-khumus" means collecting the fifth part of the spoils. Linguistically, "khamasahum" means taking a fifth of their wealth.
