مَنْ قَتَلَ مُعَاهِدًا لَهُ ذِمَّةُ اللَّهِ وَذِمَّةُ رَسُولِهِ فَقَدْ خَفَرَ ذِمَّةَ اللَّهِ

أخبرنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن يعقوب الحافظ، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن يحيى، حدثنا مُسدَّد، حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد وبِشر بن المفضَّل، عن يحيى بن سعيد، عن محمد بن يحيى بن حَبّان، عن أبي عَمْرة، عن زيد بن خالد الجُهَني: أنَّ رجلًا من أصحاب النبي ﷺ تُوفي يومَ خيبر (3) فذكروا لرسول الله ﷺ، فقال: "صلُّوا على صاحبِكم"، فتغيَّر وجوهُ الناسِ لتلك، فقال: "إنَّ صاحبَكم غَلَّ في سبيل الله"، ففتَّشْنا متاعَه فوجدنا خَرَزًا من خَرَز اليهود لا يُساوي درهمين (4). حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، وأظنهما لم يخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Khaybar a man from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) died. The people mentioned him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray the funeral prayer over your companion (that is, I will not pray it)." On hearing this, the people's faces changed (with fear and astonishment). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This companion of yours committed treachery in the way of Allah (with the spoils of war)." We searched his belongings and found some beads of the Jews' necklaces that were not worth even two dirhams.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but most probably they did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z), (B) and ('A) this word is distorted into "Hunayn", whereas the correct reading is taken from manuscript (S) and the source works of the takhrij.
(4) إسناده حسن كما بيناه عند الرواية المتقدمة برقم (1362). يحيى بن سعيد شيخ مُسدَّد: هو القطان، وشيخ القطان: هو ابن قيس الأنصاري.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan", as explained under narration no. (1362).
Identification of names: Yahya bin Sa'id, the shaykh of Musaddad, refers to "al-Qattan", and al-Qattan's shaykh is "Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari".
وأخرجه أبو داود (2710) عن مُسدَّد، وابن حبان (4853) عن الفضل بن الحُبَاب، عن مُسدَّد، بهذا الإسناد. لكن لم يذكر الفضل في روايته بشر بن المفضل.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2710) and Ibn Hibban (4853) narrated it via Musaddad, but al-Fadl did not mention Bishr bin al-Mufaddal in his narration.
وأخرجه أحمد (36/ 21675) عن يحيى بن سعيد القطان، والنسائي (2097) عن عُبيد الله ¤ ¤ ابن سعيد السَّرْخَسي، عن يحيى بن سعيد القطان، به.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (36/ 21675) and al-Nasa'i (2097) narrated it by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan.
