It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever the Companions camped at a place, they would scatter among the mountain passes and valleys. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your scattering like this in these mountain passes and valleys is only from Satan." After that, whenever they camped anywhere, they kept so close to one another that it would be said: if a single cloth were spread over them, it would cover them all.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
