Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2463

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rayhanah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition and reached a high place. There we were struck by such severe cold that one of us would dig a pit, enter it and cover himself with his shield. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this distressing state of the people, he said: "Is there a man who will guard us tonight? I will make a supplication to Allah for him through which he will attain virtue." Then a man from the Ansar stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, I (am ready). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for him. Abu Rayhanah said: Then I said: I (am ready) too. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for me as well, with a supplication somewhat lesser (in rank) than the one he made for the Ansari. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Fire has been made forbidden for an eye that shed tears out of fear of Allah; the Fire has been made forbidden for an eye that stayed awake in the way of Allah." The narrator said: I forgot the third thing. Abd al-Rahman bin Shurayh said: I heard afterwards that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: "The Fire has been made forbidden for an eye that lowered its gaze from what Allah has made unlawful," or he said: "an eye that was put out in the way of Allah."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: In the printed edition the name is "شمير" (with shin), but according to the narration of Ibn Wahb and to Imam al-Bayhaqi and al-Bukhari the correct name is "سمير" (with sin).

Grading: The chain is weak because Muhammad bin Sumayr is majhul (unknown); no one narrated from him except Abd al-Rahman bin Shurayh. Abu Ali al-Janbi is Amr bin Malik al-Hamdani.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (8818) narrated it in abridged form with only the marfu' part.
Technical note: In the narration of Zayd bin al-Hubab the shaykh's name is given as "Abu Amir" or "Abu Ali al-Tujibi", which is an error.
Note / Clarification: "Sharaf" means a raised place, and "hafir" a dug-out place.
Note / Clarification: "Hajafah" means a shield.
