It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Companions set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hunayn. They kept travelling without a break until evening came. I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of prayer when a horseman came and said: O Messenger of Allah, I went ahead of you (as a scout) until I climbed such-and-such a mountain, and there I saw that the tribe of Hawazin, all of them, with their women, their camels and their sheep and goats, had gathered at Hunayn. Hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: "If Allah wills, tomorrow all of this will be spoils for the Muslims." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will guard us tonight?" Sayyiduna Anas bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, I am here. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mount." He mounted his horse and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Go towards this mountain pass until you reach its top, and let us not be taken by surprise from your side tonight (through negligence)." When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to his place of prayer and offered two rak'ahs, then asked: "Have you sensed your horseman (that is, has he been seen)?" A man said: We have not seen him. Then the iqamah for the prayer was called, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept turning towards that pass even during the prayer until he (peace and blessings be upon him) completed his prayer. Then he said: "Rejoice, for your horseman has come." The narrator said: We began looking towards the shade of the trees in the pass, and suddenly he appeared, came up to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), stopped, and greeted him with salam. Then he said: I set off until I reached the top of this pass where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered me to go. When morning came, I looked over both passes but saw no one. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Did you dismount (from your horse) tonight?" He said: No, except to pray or to relieve myself. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "You have made (Paradise) obligatory (for yourself); there is no harm for you now if you do no (further voluntary) deeds after this."
The chain of this hadith, from its beginning to its end, is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record the musnad reports of Sayyiduna Sahl Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah because few of the Tabi'in narrated from him, even though he is among the senior Companions.

Grading: The hadith is sahih and the narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but the name "Abu Sallam Mamtur al-Habashi" has dropped out of Imam al-Hakim's narration. Zayd bin Sallam's direct hearing from Abu Kabshah al-Saluli is not established. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2506) and al-Nasa'i (8819) narrated it via Abu Tawbah. Note / Clarification: "Atnabu al-sayr" means to push the journey to its limit, or to travel very fast. Note / Clarification: "Bakrati abihim" means that they came, all of them, with no one staying behind. Note / Clarification: "Thuwwiba bi-l-salah" means the call to the prayer was made and the iqamah was said. Note / Clarification: "Zu'un" means their women. Note / Clarification: "Na'am" means their camels, sheep, cattle and other livestock; it is mostly used for camels. Note / Clarification: "Awjabta" means you have done a deed by which Paradise has become due to you. General principle: It means that the merit of this one night is so great that even if you are unable to do voluntary worship and good deeds after it, this night suffices for your reward. It does not mean that the obligatory duties are waived; rather, it is meant to encourage voluntary deeds and to state the merit of jihad.
(97). Important point: Imam al-Hakim claimed in his book "al-Madkhal" that the condition of al-Bukhari and Muslim is that every narrator has at least two thiqah students, whereas this claim is false, as Allamah al-Hazimi and al-Maqdisi refuted it. A detailed discussion of this has already passed under hadith no. (97).
