Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2436

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man from the people of Paradise will be brought, and Allah Almighty will say to him: O son of Adam! How have you found your abode? He will say: O my Lord! The best of abodes. Allah will say: Ask and wish for something. He will say: What should I ask of You and wish for? I ask only that You send me back to the world so that I may be martyred in Your path ten times, because he will have seen the excellence of martyrdom." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And a man from the people of Hell will be brought, and Allah will say: O son of Adam! How have you found your abode? He will say: O my Lord! The worst of abodes. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: Would you give the earth's fill of gold as ransom to be saved from it? He will say: Yes. Allah will say: You have lied; I asked of you something far less and easier than that, but you did not do it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "al-Qari", whereas the correct form is "al-Qarizi" (with a za' after the ra'), an attribution to a village of Naysabur called "Qariz". Al-Sam'ani's "al-Ansab" and Yaqut's "Mu'jam al-Buldan" state this explicitly.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Qarizi is actually Muhammad bin Muhammad bin al-Hasan, whom the author sometimes attributes to his grandfather. Thabit is Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (12342, 13162, 13511), al-Nasa'i (4353) and Ibn Hibban (7350) narrated it through various routes from Hammad bin Salamah.
Reference / Source: The first part of the hadith, with the word "martyr" instead of "a man from the people of Paradise", was narrated by Imam Ahmad (12771, 13926, 14083), al-Bukhari (2817), Muslim (1877), al-Tirmidhi (1661) and Ibn Hibban (4662) via Qatadah from Anas.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hammad bin Salamah also narrated this same part via Thabit from Anas, but it has the words "and he is killed" and does not mention "ten times". Ahmad (12273, 12557, 14033) narrated it.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, al-Bukhari (6538, 3334, 6557), Muslim (2805) and Ibn Hibban narrated the second part via Qatadah and Abu 'Imran al-Jawni from Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Jawni's narration has the words "Allah will say to the one among the people of the Fire with the lightest punishment", while Qatadah said "it will be said to the disbeliever".

Note / Clarification: "Tila' al-ard" means an amount that fills the earth so that it rises above it and flows over.
