Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 227

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Aqil al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with the delegation of Banu Thaqif. We travelled along one of the roads of Madinah until we made our camels kneel at (his) door. At that time there was no one among the people more hateful to us than the man to whom we were going in (that is, at first we had intense hatred for him). But when we entered, greeted him and gave our pledge of allegiance, then by the time we came out there was no one among the people more beloved to us than the man from whose presence we had come out. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Did you not ask your Lord for a kingdom like the kingdom of Sulayman (peace be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: "Perhaps your companion (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) has with Allah something better than the kingdom of Sulayman (peace be upon him). Allah gave every prophet one supplication (which was to be accepted). Some of them asked for worldly things with it and were given them, and some prayed against their people and they were destroyed. Allah gave me a supplication too, and I have kept it hidden (in reserve) with my Lord as intercession for my Ummah on the Day of Resurrection."
Muslim used Ali bin Hashim as evidence, and Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Aqil al-Thaqafi is a Companion whom our imams have used as evidence in their Musnad collections. As for Abd al-Jabbar bin al-Abbas, he is one of those narrators whose hadiths are collected, and his Musnad narrations are counted among the Kufans.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word has been distorted into "al-Shami", whereas the correct form is what we have established (i.e. al-Shibami), as is known from the sources of his biography; "Shibam" is the name of a mountain in Yemen near San'a'.

Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ali bin Abd al-Aziz is Abu al-Hasan al-Baghawi.
Reference / Source: Ibn Khuzaymah narrated it in "al-Tawhid" (vol. 2, pp. 649-650) by way of Muhammad bin Uthman bin Abi Safwan, from Sulayman bin Dawud, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated through the route of Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Ansari, who reported it from Ali bin Hashim bin al-Barid.
Reference / Source: Al-Harith bin Abi Usamah narrated it in his "Musnad" (1134 - Bughyat al-Bahith), and through his route Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (4649), by way of Abd al-Aziz bin Aban, from Abd al-Jabbar bin al-Abbas.
Reference / Source: This narration was reported by numerous imams, among them Ibn Sa'd (al-Tabaqat, vol. 8, p. 163), Ibn Abi Shaybah (Musnad 642, Musannaf vol. 11, p. 482), Ibn Shabbah (Tarikh al-Madinah, vol. 2, pp. 512-513), Ya'qub bin Sufyan (al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh, vol. 1, pp. 288-289), Ibn Abi Asim (al-Ahad wa al-Mathani 1600, al-Sunnah 824), al-Bazzar (Kashf al-Astar 3459), al-Dulabi (al-Kuna wa al-Asma' 914), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi (Mu'jam al-Sahabah 1923), al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi (Nawadir al-Usul 436), al-Tahawi (Mushkil al-Athar 3968), Ibn Qani' (Mu'jam al-Sahabah vol. 2, pp. 170-171), Abu Nu'aym (Ma'rifat al-Sahabah 4649), al-Bayhaqi (Dala'il al-Nubuwwah vol. 5, p. 358), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq 937) and Ibn Asakir (Tarikh Dimashq vol. 35, p. 44); all these narrations are through the route of Abu Khalid al-Dalani al-Asadi, who narrates from Awn bin Abi Juhayfah.
Grading: Abu Khalid al-Asadi is saduq (truthful), and his hadith is of the hasan level.

Important point: Al-Dhahabi, in the "Talkhis", objecting to al-Hakim's statement about Abd al-Jabbar, said: "Some declared him strong, while Abu Nu'aym al-Mula'i called him a liar, and the hadith is not established."
Note / Clarification: This statement of al-Dhahabi here is an excess (ghuluw) on his part, because he himself, in his other book "Ithbat al-Shafa'ah" (64), mentioned this hadith through the route of Abu Khalid al-Asadi and said there that "its chain is muqarib", meaning that it is fit to be graded hasan.
