Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 226

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that they were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his military expeditions. Awf said: I heard behind me a rumbling like the turning of a millstone, and I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was coming. I said: O Messenger of Allah! When you are in the land of the enemy, there should be guards over you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One came to me from my Lord and gave me the choice between half of my Ummah being admitted into Paradise and my receiving the right of intercession, and I chose intercession." Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! You know my firmness (in faith), so include me among those who receive intercession. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are among them." Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! You know that we left our homes and our wealth for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, so include us among them too. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are among them too." Then we reached the rest of the people, and they had woken up. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down," and they all sat down as if none of them had got up. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One came to me from my Lord and gave me the choice between Paradise for half of my Ummah and intercession, and I chose intercession." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! Include us among them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This intercession is for everyone who dies without associating anything with Allah."

Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is mentioned (erroneously) like this in the manuscripts of the "Mustadrak", and likewise in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Mahara" (16051), attributed to al-Hakim, but there the words "bin Khalid" are missing from the name of Khalid bin Abd Allah. All of this is an error; the correct version is that it is the narration of Khalid bin Abd Allah al-Wasiti, who reports it from Khalid al-Hadhdha' al-Basri, who reports it from Humayd bin Hilal, as already stated in the source works cited in the takhrij of the previous hadith.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This (chain) occurred like this with the author (al-Hakim), and it is likewise with Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban, whereas with the other hadith scholars it is "from Abu Burdah Ibn Abi Musa from Awf", meaning it is the narration of Abu Burdah, who reports it from Awf, and this is the correct version.

Grading: This hadith is sahih and all its narrators are thiqah.

Reference / Source: Furthermore, see the takhrij of hadith (23977) of the "Musnad Ahmad", where he narrated it through the route of Abu al-Malih, from Abu Burdah, from Awf bin Malik.
