It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his military expeditions. One night we made camp, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was not in his place. Our companions were (in such deep sleep) as if there were rocks on their heads, and the camels too were resting with their necks laid on the ground. I saw a shadow, and when I looked it was Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). We came face to face, and I asked: Where is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: He is right behind me. Then he mentioned the whole hadith.
This hadith of Abu Qilabah is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

Note / Clarification: The text between the brackets [ ] is not in manuscripts (S) and (B), and this hadith together with the following hadiths (up to hadith number 227) are part of a lost leaf of manuscript (Z). We have included this addition from the narration of Ishaq bin Shahin (Abu Bishr al-Wasiti), which is found in al-Ruyani's "Musnad" (600) and Ibn Khuzaymah's "al-Tawhid" (vol. 1, pp. 393-394). Details of the narration: In the printed edition of Ibn Abi Dawud's "al-Ba'th" (43) the wording is "ka-anna 'ala ru'usihim al-tayr" (as though birds were perched on their heads); the same wording is in Ibn Hibban (7207) in the narration of Wahb bin Baqiyyah from Khalid bin Abd Allah al-Wasiti. Whereas in Ibn Abi Asim's "al-Sunnah" (819), the narration of Wahb has the wording "ka-anna 'ala ru'usihim al-sakhrah" (as though a rock were on their heads), and in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (vol. 18, no. 133), in the narration of Amr bin Awn from Khalid al-Wasiti, the wording recorded is "ka-anna 'ala ru'usihim al-sukhur" (as though rocks were on their heads).
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Qilabah is Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi. Reference / Source: For the takhrij of this hadith, see the previous commentary. Note / Clarification: Linguistically, "jiran" is the front part of a camel's neck, from its throat to its chest; when the camel kneels and stretches its neck out on the ground, the expression is used: "alqa jiranahu bil-ard" (it laid its jiran on the ground).
