Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2103

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The surah 'When the earth is shaken' [Surah al-Zalzalah: 1] is equal to half of the Qur'an, the surah 'Say: O disbelievers' [Surah al-Kafirun: 1] is equal to a quarter of the Qur'an, and the surah 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah al-Ikhlas: 1] is equal to a third of the Qur'an."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Because of the weakness of Yaman bin al-Mughirah this chain is da'if, as Imam al-Dhahabi said.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "gharib", because it is known only through the route of Yaman.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is with Ibn al-Sunni, but its chain is "very weak".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is in al-Tirmidhi, but its narrator al-Hasan bin Salm is "majhul" (unknown), and Imam al-Dhahabi called it "munkar".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On the virtue of Surah al-Zalzalah there is a mursal narration of al-Hasan al-Basri, but the mursal narrations of al-Hasan are not considered strong by the scholars.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called a narration of Anas (al-Zalzalah equals a quarter of the Qur'an) hasan, but in it Salamah bin Wardan is "da'if and munkar al-hadith".
Important point: According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar this hadith is da'if; al-Tirmidhi was lenient in calling it hasan because it concerns the virtues of deeds.
Grading: Regarding Surah al-Zalzalah, the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr (4008) is sahih, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught a man this entire surah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among the supporting reports for Surah al-Kafirun, the narration of Ibn 'Umar is da'if.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is also da'if, because of the weakness mentioned earlier.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In the narration of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, Zakariyya bin 'Atiyyah is "munkar al-hadith".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The saying of the Tabi'i Bakr bin 'Abd Allah al-Muzani is narrated with thiqah narrators.
Grading: The hadith of Nawfal al-Ashja'i, in which it is called "a disavowal of shirk", is "hasan".
General principle: That Surah al-Ikhlas equals "a third of the Qur'an" is established by several narrations in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim (Abu Sa'id, Qatadah, Abu al-Darda', Abu Hurayrah).
Guidance: See all its supporting reports in Musnad Ahmad under the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr (6613).
