It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep up the recitation of this Qur'an, for it escapes (from the breasts); it escapes from people's breasts faster than a camel escapes from its tethering ropes. And let none of you ever say: I have forgotten such-and-such a verse; rather (let him say that) he was made to forget it."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih"; all its narrators are trustworthy except Asim, who is saduq (truthful) but makes errors. There is disagreement over him regarding its being marfu' or mawquf and the name of the Successor, but its being "marfu'" is authentically established through other routes. Reference / Source: Al-Shashi, al-Tabarani and Abu Nu'aym recorded it through the route of Abu Ghassan Malik bin Isma'il. In the printed edition of "al-Hilyah" the name "Shu'ayb bin Khalid" has been corrupted to "Shu'bah from Khalid". Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani and Abu Nu'aym recorded it through the route of Abdullah bin Salih al-Ijli from Zuhayr. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad recorded it from Hammad bin Zayd and al-Tabarani from Aban bin Yazid al-Attar; both narrated it from Asim from Abu Wa'il from Ibn Mas'ud as "marfu'". Reference / Source: Sa'id bin Mansur recorded it through the route of Hammad bin Zayd as "mawquf" on Ibn Mas'ud. Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq recorded it through the route of Ma'mar as "marfu'", whereas Abu Ubayd recorded it through the route of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash as "mawquf". Reference / Source: Also Abu Ubayd recorded it through the route of Shayban bin Abd al-Rahman as "mawquf" on Ibn Mas'ud. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among the routes narrated from Asim, the preferred one is that which mentions "Abu Wa'il", because Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir supported him, and al-Bukhari (5032) and Muslim (790) recorded it as "marfu'". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: With Imam Muslim, al-A'mash also supported it, except that he kept the first part (keeping up the Qur'an) mawquf and narrated the second part (the prohibition of saying "I forgot") as marfu'. Important point: It appears that Ibn Mas'ud himself would sometimes narrate it as marfu' and sometimes as mawquf, and sometimes narrate half the hadith as marfu'. (791). General principle: The first part of the hadith (keeping up the Qur'an) is established as marfu' from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari and Muslim. Note / Clarification: "Wahshi" means an (animal) which is difficult to catch when its rope comes loose. Note / Clarification: "Tafassiyan" means: getting out or breaking loose. Note / Clarification: "'Uqul" is the plural of "'iqal", which means rope.
Note / Clarification: This is what al-Hakim said! Yet the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) have recorded it with the chain of Ibn Mas'ud, as has passed.
