Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2054

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first Book was revealed from a single gate in a single mode (harf), whereas the Qur'an was revealed from seven gates in seven modes (ahruf), containing restraint, command, the lawful, the unlawful, the clear (muhkam), the ambiguous (mutashabih) and parables. So regard its lawful as lawful, regard its unlawful as unlawful, do what you have been commanded, and refrain from what you have been forbidden, take lessons from its parables, act upon its clear verses, believe in its ambiguous verses, and say: 'We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.'" [Surah Al Imran: 7]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is weak due to "inqita'" (a break in the chain). According to Imam al-Tahawi and Ibn Abd al-Barr, Abu Salamah's meeting Ibn Mas'ud is not established. Also Ibn Abd al-Barr declared Salamah bin Abi Salamah not fit to be used as proof. Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar also declared it defective because of the break, and rejected the authentication of al-Hakim and Ibn Hibban.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban recorded it through the chain of Abu Ya'la from Abu Hammam (al-Walid bin Shuja' al-Sakuni).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tahawi recorded it in "Mushkil al-Athar" through the route of Haywah bin Shurayh.
Variation in the chain: Al-Layth bin Sa'd contradicted Haywah; he narrated it from al-Zuhri from Salamah bin Abi Salamah as "mursal" (without mentioning Ibn Mas'ud).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i recorded it through the route of Fulfulah al-Ju'fi as "mawquf" on Ibn Mas'ud (his own saying), and its chain has "layyin" (slight weakness).
Details of the narration: This hadith will come again with the author at no. (3181) through the route of al-Hasan bin Ahmad bin al-Layth.
