It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge with these words: 'A'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannam, wa 'adhabil-qabr, wa fitnatil-mahya wa fitnatil-mamat, wa fitnatid-dajjal' (I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the trial of the Dajjal).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and the chain is "hasan" because of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Thabit; it has other corroborations. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it through the chain of Zayd bin al-Hubab. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i narrated it through Abu al-Zinad from al-A'raj. In some of al-Nasa'i's narrations it is given as a command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ("seek refuge"). Guidance: This narration has already passed at no. (1024) through Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated it through routes other than that of al-A'raj; perhaps the author (al-Hakim) intended the al-A'raj route specifically, and if so, his istidrak (adding it as missed by them) is correct.
